Dosakaya Mamsam

Dosakaya is from the cucumber family. It's so hard to find this vegetable (Dosakaya) in Toronto. I never used to care this vegetable back in India. But now when I don't get it much here, I started missing... I miss Dosakaya pappu, Dosakaya pachadi, Dosakaya mamsam etc.  I substituted it with english cucumber and managed all these years. English cucumber is not sour like the Dosakaya, But it gives almost the same flavour. My friend from U.S wanted to visit me, and asked me what do you want from here? I quickly, without any hesitation said " Dosakaya".  She brought this vegetable all the way from Detroit, with so much love and care. I prepared Dosakaya mamsam with it , and it came out perfectly well... Here is the recipe...

Ingredients:
Lamb meat - 1lb
Cucumber - 1 diced
Onions -2 sliced
Green chillies - 2
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Ginger & garlic paste - 1 tsp
Coriander pwd - 1 tbsp
Turmeric pwd - a pinch
Red chilli pwd - 2 tsp ( adjust according to taste)
Garam masala pwd - 1/4 tsp
Oil - 3 tbsp
Salt to taste

Method :
Heat oil in a deep vessel or cooker, add chopped onions, green chillies, curry leaves and fry until onions are golden brown. Add ginger garlic paste and fry.

Add salt, red chilli powder, coriander and turmeric and mix . Now add meat and fry till it changes colour. Pour 1/2 cup water, cover the cooker with the lid and let it cook until the meat is soft and tender.

Let the steam go off the cooker and open the lid.

Now add chopped cucumber pieces to the meat, cover and cook until 1 more whistle.( do not over cook at this point as cucumber will be melt)

Finally, add garam masala powder, and serve hot with roti or hot steamed rice.
